Every March through May, the ground around Genesee County does the same thing. Frozen soil thaws, weeks of accumulated snow melt all at once, and spring rains pile on top. All that water has to go somewhere, and gravity carries a lot of it toward the lowest point around — your basement floor.
Homes near the Flint River feel it most. When the river rises with snowmelt, the water table climbs across low-lying neighborhoods, and hydrostatic pressure pushes groundwater up through foundation cracks and floor seams. Your sump pump is the one piece of equipment standing between that water and your finished basement.
If it is not sized right, not maintained, or not backed up, spring is when you find out — usually at the worst possible moment.
How a sump pump actually works
The system is simple, which is exactly why people ignore it until it fails. Groundwater collects in a pit, called the sump basin, dug into the lowest part of your basement or crawl space. As water fills the pit, a float switch rises and triggers the pump, which sends the water out through a discharge pipe and away from the foundation.
There are two common types:
- Submersible pumps sit down inside the pit, run quieter, and handle higher volumes. They are the usual choice for basements that see real water.
- Pedestal pumps keep the motor up above the pit. They are easier to service and can last a long time, but they are louder and move less water.
Sizing: bigger is not automatically better
An undersized pump cannot keep up during a fast thaw. An oversized one short-cycles — switching on and off constantly — which wears out the motor early. Getting it right depends on a few things:
- How much water your pit takes on during a heavy event. We measure the inflow rate to size correctly.
- The height it has to lift the water, called head, plus the length of the discharge run.
- Your home's flood history. A basement that has taken on water before needs more capacity and, honestly, a backup.
This is why we do not just hand everyone the same pump. Proper sump pump installation starts with matching capacity to your actual conditions.
Why battery backup is not optional in Michigan
Here is the cruel irony of spring storms: the same weather that dumps water into your pit also knocks out the power that runs your pump. A primary pump plugged into the wall is useless during an outage, and outages love to arrive right when the pump is needed most.
A battery backup system, such as a Basement Watchdog, keeps the pump running when the grid goes down. Options include:
- Battery backup pumps — a second pump on a deep-cycle battery that takes over automatically.
- Water-powered backups — for homes with municipal water pressure, these run without electricity at all.

Spring maintenance: test it before you need it
A sump pump can sit idle for months, and idle equipment fails silently. Take ten minutes each spring, before the melt really gets going, to run through this:
- Pour a bucket of water into the pit. The float should rise, the pump should kick on, move the water out, and shut off cleanly. If it does not, that is your warning.
- Check the discharge line outside. Make sure it is clear, not frozen or crushed, and directs water well away from the foundation.
- Clean the pit. Remove gravel, silt, and debris that can jam the float or clog the intake.
- Test the backup. Unplug the primary pump and confirm the backup takes over. Check the battery's age and charge.
- Listen for odd noises. Grinding, rattling, or constant cycling all point to a pump nearing the end.
If anything on that list looks off, deal with it in March, not during a two a.m. downpour in April.
When to call instead of tinker
Some sump problems are DIY-friendly. Others are a sign the whole system needs attention. Call a plumber if you see standing water the pump will not clear, hear the motor running nonstop, smell a burnt odor, or find the pit filling faster than the pump empties it. A failing pump during flood season is a genuine emergency, and we answer those calls day or night.
